This week in our art group we surprised ourselves with our capacity, out of clay and out of ourselves, to create new forms. From this experience the insight came to us that the purpose of developmental practice can be expressed as being to increase our capacity as individuals, communities and nations to move out of the prison of poverty and dependency and habit, to out of ourselves, freely create new futures. Amartya Sen articulated this notion as “development as freedom”. The McGregor Manifesto takes this idea one step further with the articulation “Development as Art”.
