A voice is a very strange and fascinating thing. It is our first instrument, a kind of physical thought that expresses outwards that which we hold within us.
We are enabled to sing by virtue of our design - the body is actually a sophisticated resonating system, making it altogether natural for us to create sound.
This is why, when I facilitate voice workshops, I don’t attempt to teach people to sing, but rather I help the song to issue out of the participants.
A vocalizing session usually flows out in this kind of simple sequential pattern:
breathing in –
breaking the ice –
warming the voice –
listening through chaos –
finding harmony –
breathing out.
It becomes wonderful when everybody is prepared to be a little silly and playful.
The moment at which everybody is listening acutely to the noise coming out the mouths of others in the ensemble is when the sweetest harmonies occur, almost all by themselves.
